The Oklahoma Sooners welcome the Auburn Tigers for a top-25 showdown on Saturday in the first SEC contest for both programs. The two sides are aiming for better seasons than last year and are off to 3-0 starts.

Auburn opened the season with a decisive 38-24 win over the Baylor Bears on the road in Waco before rattling off wins over Ball State and South Alabama. The offense has been led by a strong rushing attack, led by former Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold.

The Oklahoma Sooners opened the season with a business-like effort against Illinois State before making a statement with a 24-13 win over the Michigan Wolverines. They dominated Temple on the road in Philadelphia in Week 3 to move to 3-0. While the run game improved for the Sooners last Saturday, the team has been defined offensively by the play of transfer quarterback John Mateer and a dominant defense.

Arnold's return to Norman has been the biggest talking point leading up to the game. While head coaches Brent Venables and Hugh Freeze have focused more on the teams than the individual players in this game, Arnold's return is certainly a significant storyline heading into the game.

For Oklahoma, it's been about Mateer and the defense. Mateer has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in college football through three games, averaging 368.4 combined passing and rushing yards per game and three touchdowns per game. He's been better than expected and showed a willingness to put the Sooners on his back in the win over Michigan. It's another significant test for Mateer in his SEC debut but he's been must-see television through three games.

Oklahoma vs Auburn predictions, picks, odds

Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Saturday, Sept. 20

  • Oklahoma 31, Auburn 17: The Oklahoma Sooners defense has been dominant to start the season. They're very good against the run, and when they get the opportunity to get after the passer, they've been incredibly effective. Auburn wants to run the ball and run it a lot and that plays right into Oklahoma's strength as a team. The Tigers won't want to rely on quarterback Jackson Arnold to throw them to a victory in this game.
  • Spread: Oklahoma by 6 1/2
  • Over/under: 46 1/2
  • Moneyline: Oklahoma minus-250, Auburn plus-200
