The SWAC men's and women's basketball tournaments will have a different format beginning in 2027.
The conference announced June 11 it was making changes. The new bracket will feature the conference's top 10 teams instead of all 12.
Additionally, the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds will receive byes to the semifinals, the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds will receive byes to the quarterfinals, and the Nos. 5 and 6 seeds will received a bye to the second round.
The first round will feature the No. 7 seed vs. the No. 10 seed and the No. 8 seed vs. the No. 9 seed.
Last season, JSU men's basketball was the No. 7 seed in the SWAC Tournament. The Tigers beat No. 9 seed Grambling State in the second round but lost to No. 2 Florida A&M in the quarterfinals.
The women's team was the No. 5 seed in the tournament and received byes until the quarterfinals. The Tigers lost that opening matchup to No. 4 seed Southern.
Under the new format, JSU's men's team would have played in the first round, facing No. 10 seed Alabama State, and JSU's women's team would have started in the second round, playing against No. 8 seed Florida A&M or No. 9 seed Mississippi Valley State.
The 2026-27 season will be the third for women's coach Margaret Richards and the first for men's coach Trey Johnson. The Tigers haven't won the SWAC Tournament since 2024 on the women's side and since 2007 on the men's side.
