What are refs wearing at the World Cup? Why object on head sets up great camera view originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Every referee at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has a fascinating quirk to their appearance.
They're all wearing a black headpiece, and it creates some funny optics for the refs as they run around the field and make calls that please one nation and upset another.
It's not the first time an official has ever looked like this on the pitch, but it's about as uniform as it has ever been before.
And yeah, it looks kind of silly.

What are refs wearing at the World Cup?
The referees all have a camera on their head.
It allows the broadcast to show what's called the "ref cam."
Since the camera is positioned in the same direction that a referee's head is facing, it gives basically the view that the ref has. That can be quite cool.
Here's how it worked in the Japan matchup with the Netherlands:

It might look silly on the ref's head. But man, it creates some cool camera shots.
