Why Spain's World Cup squad has no Real Madrid players originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Real Madrid has long been one of the biggest clubs in the world.
The powerhouse from the Spanish capital, as you'd expect, has sent incredible players to Spain's national team through the years.
This time around, though, the 2026 FIFA World Cup won't feature a single player on Spain's roster who plays for Real Madrid.
It's the first time that has ever happened for Spain.

Why doesn't Spain have any Real Madrid players?
As club football has grown around the world, more and more players on the top rosters aren't from the country the team plays in.
Real Madrid doesn't have a ton of Spanish players.
For example, Los Blancos' best player is a Frenchman, Kylian Mbappe.
According to USA Today, Real Madrid had seven Spanish players on their roster in 2025-26.
The most classic name in the mix was likely Dani Carvajal, the right back, but he wasn't selected. Dean Huijsen also had a case but wasn't chosen to be a center back for Spain at this World Cup.
It's not any kind of plan to limit Real Madrid's impact on the Spanish national team. There just wasn't a lot to choose from.

How many Barcelona players play for Spain?
This will be the one statistic that bugs Real Madrid fans.
There are eight Barcelona players on the Spanish team at this World Cup.
Atletico Madrid has also placed three players into the Spain squad.
So in that regard, they both beat Real Madrid.
