Cape Verde, otherwise known as Cabo Verde, couldn't have asked for a tougher test in their World Cup debut.

The opening matchup on Monday in group action is Spain, one of the favorites to win this tournament. The on-paper mismatch takes place in Atlanta, and it's a triumphant day for the island nation.

Cape Verde showed themself well, too, putting Spain on at least a tiny bit of upset watch early.

Here's more to know about Cape Verde.

Who is CPV country at World Cup?

Cape Verde is abbreviated on scoreboards around the world as CPV, not a country many know on the world soccer scene.

It's a collection of islands off the coast of West Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean.

It used to be under the rule of Portugal but became independent in 1975.

What language do they speak in Cape Verde?

The official language of the country is Portuguese, but it's not the most spoken language.

Cape Verdean Creole, also known as Crioulo, is spoken by most of the residents of the country.

How did Cape Verde qualify for the World Cup?

They won their group in qualifying in Africa.

It was a six-team group that also included Cameroon, Libya, Angola, Mauritius and Eswatini.

Cape Verde won six matches, drew one and lost one. That was enough to make it to the World Cup.
