As the Cleveland Browns slowly begin to prepare for the 2026 NFL season, the questions surrounding one of the team’s top veterans on defense continue to grow this offseason.
After the recent trade of star pass rusher Myles Garrett earlier this month, safety Grant Delpit is now one of the longest-tenured Browns players on the defense. And while the longtime defensive back has proven to be a significant part of the defense since his arrival in Cleveland, his future with the organization remains a mystery.
With Delpit entering the final year of his contract, here’s what a potential extension could look like for the talented player if general manager Andrew Berry decides to pull the trigger this offseason.
Delpit, after being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, has been a key playmaker in the Browns’ defensive back unit. In his five seasons with the organization, the 27-year-old safety recorded 451 tackles, seven interceptions, and three forced fumbles, which paved the way for him to receive a three-year, $36 million extension before the 2023 NFL season.
However, with Delpit entering the final year of his contract, it’s clear that the veteran defender is seeking a pay raise before the upcoming season. While he has been attending the team’s offseason workouts, Delpit has remained on the sidelines, with many expecting him to be waiting for an extension.
If we compare Delpit’s success over the past few seasons to his fellow safeties across the league, one name that could provide a baseline to a possible extension number is Houston Texans’ star Jalen Pitre. The former 2022 second-round pick received a three-year, $39 million extension with the organization last offseason, making him one of the 15th-highest-paid safeties in the NFL.
If the Browns ultimately decide to extend Delpit for the foreseeable future, the cost to retain the veteran playmaker would be roughly the same amount that the team is currently paying him. But with the recent selection of Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the 2026 NFL Draft, Cleveland could hold off on an extension. Berry recently locked down 2023 UDFA Ronnie Hickman to a one-year, $3.52 million restricted free agent deal this offseason, which could affect a potential extension for Delpit.
