ESPN encourages Browns to get this defender deal done

The Cleveland Browns have seen a lot of changes over the last year. In many ways, the youth movement has hit hyperspeed with the departures of DE Myles Garrett, TE David Njoku, and OL Wyatt Teller, along with the retirement of OL Joel Bitonio.

In many ways, CB Denzel Ward and S Grant Delpit are the longest-standing, veteran players on the Browns roster. Delpit, along with fellow starting safetyRonnie Hickman, is set to hit free agency this year, and speculation around Ward’s trade availability will likely resurface at the NFL trade deadline, even if the corner wants to stick around.

In an article encouraging each of the 32 teams to get one final move done, ESPN’s Aaron Schatz encouraged Cleveland GM Andrew Berry to get an extension signed with Delpit:

Delpit is still playing at a high level. It can be hard to judge safety play, whether you use statistics or scouting, but Sports Info Solutions ranked him seventh among all safeties in its “total points saved” metric last season.

Delpit’s current contract has him outside of the top 15 at the safety position and less than half of what Derwin James and Kyle Hamilton are getting paid. The Browns safety is unlikely to reach the $20 million per year mark that four others are making, but could enter the next tier of safeties around $15 million or so in an extension.
