German luge icons Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt will carry the German flag at the Winter Olympics closing ceremony on Sunday following consternation that they were overlooked for the opening ceremony in favour of Games debutant Leon Draisaitl.
The ice hockey star was chosen for the opening ceremony in Milan partly by public vote despite his lack of Olympic pedigree. NHL players were not permitted to compete at the previous two Olympics.
The decision was widely criticized in Germany.
But now Wendl and Arlt have the honour at the end of the Games in Verona after bronze in the doubles and gold in the team relay made them the most successful German Winter Olympians with seven golds and eight medals in total.
This is the final Games for the pair, both 38, and they will go out on a high.
"What they have achieved will remain forever. We are delighted to have found two wonderful flag bearers in the Tobis. They absolutely deserve this honour,’ Thomas Weikert, president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), said in a statement on Friday.
"We will miss them in Team D and hope to give them a fitting send-off with the experience of being flag bearers."
