Former University of Wisconsin hockey star Hilary Knight, one of the American stars at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan/Cortina, has been chosen as one of the country's flag-bearers for the closing ceremony Feb. 22.
Knight got the news live on NBC's "Today" as part of a segment with the entire U.S. women's hockey team. She'll be joined by figure skater Evan Bates representing the United States as flag bearer. Both Knight and Bates are five-time Olympians.
Knight's deflection of teammate Laila Edwards' shot got Team USA on the board with just more than 2 minutes left in the Feb. 19 gold-medal match against Canada. The goal gave her the most career USA Olympic goals and points.
USA won gold in overtime on Megan Keller's superb goal past Canada goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens, another UW alumna who came so close to a shutout before having to settle for a 2-1 loss and a silver medal.
USA and Canada, the powerhouses of the women's hockey world, featured rosters with 11 current or former Badgers.
Knight's huge moment came one day after she and speedskater Brittany Bowe announced their engagement on social media. Bowe, herself competing in her fourth Olympics in 2026, has won two Olympic bronze medals in her career and a litany of international medals.
Knight has two golds and three silvers in Olympic competition.
The closing ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. CT on Feb. 22.
