Four time alpine skiing gold medallist Anna-Lena Forster and 60-year-old ice hockey player Jörg Wedde have been named German flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the Winter Paralympics on Friday.

Monoskier Forster had the same honour four years in Beijing while Wedde was a member of the püara ice hockey team the last time Germany qualified 2006 in Turin.

They will not appear in person at the ceremony in Verona but via a video link. The flags of the participating nations will be carried by volunteers in Verona.

Forster said she was disappointed that the Paralympics did not follow the recent example of the Olympics where the parade of nations withb the flag bearers not only took place at the main ceremony in Milan but also in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Livigno and Tesero.

"A lot is lost that way," she said, while naming the flag bearer honour "a complete surprise."

The International Paralympic Comittee (IPC) has named logistical reasons for having volunteers carry the flags because many teams were not sending athletes because of the big distances to venues and the start of competition on Saturday morning.
