The Washington Nationals fell back in the loss column in game one of the six-game homestand after the San Diego Padres took a 7-5 finish on Friday night.
Paxton Schultz opened for the Nationals while the team combined to throw just four strikeouts while allowing five earned runs and ten hits in the loss.
Both Curtis Mead and Keibert Ruiz posted multi-hit games the loss, the second time Ruiz has done so in as many games.
The Padres struck in the opening frame after Paxton Schultz gave up consecutive singles to open the game before a sac fly to left field opened the scoring.
The Nationals answered back in the bottom of the inning after a 414 foot home run by Curtis Mead pushed the Nationals back ahead, 2-1, thanks to James Wood drawing a leadoff walk. A 382 foot solo home run from Keibert Ruiz in the second inning pushed it to 3-1, but with Andrew Alvarez on the mound since midway in the second inning to replace Jake Irvin in the rotation, the Padres answered back in the third after a two-out RBI single into right field cut it to 3-2.
The second RBI of the season for Dylan Crews would come in the bottom of the third after his single into center drove in CJ Abrams from second base.
After Alvarez gave up another leadoff single in the fourth inning, the Padres put runners on the corners before driving in runs in consecutive at bats to tie the game at four. The Nationals would answer back in the fifth after a two-out single from Jacob Young drove in Curtis Mead, but it'd mark the final time Washington would have the lead.
After Mitchell Parker took the mound for the sixth inning, a 413 foot solo shot would tie the game at five before a two-run home run in the seventh inning push the Padres ahead for good, 7-5.
Cole Henry would get the Nationals out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning to keep Washington within striking distance, but after getting a pair of runners on the corners in the bottom of the inning, James Wood drew a walk to load the bases before a flyout to left field from Luis Garcia Jr. ended the threat.
With the Nationals back at .500 overall, Washington will look to bounce back in game two of the series on Saturday with Foster Griffin set to take the mound for a 4:05 PM scheduled opening pitch.
