After dropping the series opener, the Washington Nationals have now evened the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks after taking game two, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.
Foster Griffin allowed three earned runs, six hits and one walk on 108 pitches and 6.2 innings, while CJ Abrams and Jacob Young both recorded multi-hit games in the win. Abrams finished a triple away from hitting for the cycle, while Dylan Crews drew three walks on Saturday.
After a scoreless first two inning, the Diamondbacks would be first to strike the scoreboard after Griffin gave up a leadoff single before hitting the ensuing base runner then sac bunt advancing the runners to second and third. With one out, a two-run RBI single to center marked the most runs Griffin allowed in a game since May 30 to put Arizona ahead, 2-0.
Yet the Nationals would answer back in the bottom of the inning after Curtis Mead drew a walk before Andres Chaparro and CJ Abrams, fresh off a new wave of trade rumors, hit consecutive doubles to tie the game at two. After Dylan Crews walked and Jacob Young singled to center, a triple from Daylen Lile gave the Nationals its first lead of the day, 4-2, after runs from Crews and Young.
Griffin would retire the side in both the fourth and fifth inning before CJ Abrams opened the bottom of the fifth with a 390 foot home run, marking his fourth home run and ninth RBI since the All Star break. It also marked his 25th home run of the season, putting him and James Wood as the only players in baseball with at least 25 home runs and 15 stolen bases.
After Arizona turned in an RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3, manager Blake Butera turned to reliever Eddy Yean to secure the final out of the inning, which came on a groundout to first base.
Washington threatened in the bottom of the seventh after CJ Abrams opened the frame with a single followed up by another Crews walk. After Young and Lile struck out, Washington would load the bases after Nasim Nunez drew a five-pitch walk, yet a groundout from Keibert Ruiz turned it all into nothing.
Clayton Beeter closed out the ninth inning to secure the win.
The Nationals will now look to take the rubber match on Sunday afternoon with Miles Mikolas set to take the mound and first pitch set for 1:35 PM.
