The Washington Nationals followed up a seesaw game that ended with a win on Monday night by falling back in the loss column after the Houston Astros took a 6-3 finish to even the series.

Andrew Alvarez allowed a season-high five earned runs and four hits while tossing three strikeouts on 97 pitches and 5.2 innings. Justin Lawrence tossed a strikeout in his lone batter faced while Riley Cornelio tossed three strikeouts across 1.1 innings before Carson Palmquist closed out the final inning with just one walk allowed. Matt Krook also made his debut with the Nationals where he allowed one hit and tossed one strikeout in 0.2 innings.

James Wood, Luis Garcia Jr, Curtis Mead and Nasim Nunez all notched multi-hit games in the loss.

The game started well for Washington after James Wood followed up his grand slam on Monday night with a 419 foot solo home run to open the first inning, but Houston would tie it up on a sac fly the following inning. Washington would then re-take the lead after CJ Abrams notched a sac fly in the bottom of the third, but the Astros would answer back to reclaim the lead for good in the fourth inning.

After Alvarez allowed the first two batters faced to reach base, followed by a fielder's choice advancing the runners to second and third, an RBI single into left followed up by a sacrifice fly to center put the Astros back ahead, 4-2. Houston then extended that with another RBI single in the sixth inning before Cornelio gave up a 402 foot solo home run to Jose Altuve off an 85 mph slider.

The Nationals would get one last chance in the ninth inning, though.

Jose Tena notched his second home run as a pinch hitter to make it a 6-3 contest before James Wood followed it up with a single into right. After the Astros turned to a pitching change, Curtis Mead would then reach base thanks to an error before CJ Abrams drew a six pitch walk to load the bases.

Then came Dylan Crews, who watched his chance to be the hero slip away after missing on consecutive sinkers with the strikeout sealing the 6-3 finish.

Washington, now 47-46 overall, will close out the series on Wednesday in hopes of picking up their first win in a rubber match in July. Foster Griffin is set to take the mound with first pitch set for 6:45 PM ET.
