The Washington Huskies jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday and never looked back in an 11-2 win over the Pepperdine Waves on Tuesday afternoon.
After running into a well-oiled machine in the No. 13 USC Trojans, who swept them in Los Angeles over the weekend, coach Eddie Smith's team had a little bit of luck on their side throughout the day, as the Waves committed five errors. It started in the first inning, when a wild pitch from starter Pierson Howe scored both right fielder Braeden Terry and designated hitter Colton Bower, and from that point on, the Huskies never surrendered the lead.
Bower went 3-for-5 on the day with a run scored as left fielder Jackson Hotchkiss continued to surge. After missing the first portion of the season, the sophomore went 2-for-5 on Tuesday with a solo home run, his seventh of the season in just 12 games, surpassing the six he hit during his freshman season, and third baseman Blake Wilson went 2-for-3 with 3 runs batted in and a pair of runs scored.
Tommy Brandenberg earned the win for the Huskies after working 5 shutout innings and allowing 5 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts before he was relieved by Bryce Johnson, who went the next 3 innings and let up 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout.
Howe took the loss on a bullpen day for Pepperdine after he worked the first 2 innings and surrendered 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts as coach Tyler LaTorre utilized nine different pitchers in the contest.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 10-14 on the season, and now, they'll return home to prepare for a three-game series with the Northwestern Wildcats, which is set to begin on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. PT.
