The Washington Huskies claimed the series against the Valparaiso Beacons, but were unable to sweep them following a 4-2 loss on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Eddie Smith's team fell behind early, as the pitching staff had no answers for left fielder Brayden Pleau on the day. He blasted a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Beacons an early lead, and added a run-scoring double in the seventh as part of a 2-for-3 day with 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.

The Huskies tried to mount a comeback late, with left fielder Jackson Hotchkiss and designated hitter Alex Pearson both driving in runs on fielder's choices in the seventh and eighth innings, but it wasn't enough, as the Huskies were only able to muster 6 hits in the contest.

After what has been a strong weekend for Washington's rotation, Hayden Lewis took the loss for the Huskies. He made it through 6 2/3 innings and let up 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts, dropping to 3-4 on the year before he gave way to Carson Boessel, who worked the final 2 1/3, giving up 2 hits with 3 strikeouts.

Nick Baffa earned the win for the Beacons, going 5 scoreless innings while letting up 5 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. Ryan Kruse also picked up his second save of the year after working a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to shut the door.

With the loss, Washington dropped to 15-16 on the year. Smith's team will return to Husky Ballpark on Monday to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Monday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. PT.
