The Washington Huskies couldn't get anything going at the plate in a 4-0 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon, dropping the series in State College, Pennsylvania.
Coach Eddie Smith's lineup notched just 4 hits on the day, three of which came against starter Isaiah Shayter, who came into the day with a 10.66 ERA. The right-hander worked 5 scoreless innings and let up just three singles and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts to improve to 2-9 on the year.
For the Nittany Lions, catcher Avery Smith was a thorn in the side of Washington's pitching staff throughout the day. He went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, while right fielder Jesse Jancoski went 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo homer, and 3 runs scored.
The Huskies left eight runners on base on the afternoon and were only able to put more than one on base in an inning once after the first two frames, as the Nittany Lions' pitching staff struck out 9 hitters in the contest.
Hayden Lewis took the loss for Washington and dropped to 6-5 on the year after letting up 4 runs on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout over 5 1/3 innings.
With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 22-29 on the year and 11-16 in Big Ten play. Next, the Huskies will return home to take on the No. 1 UCLA Bruins and the projected top pick in the 2026 MLB draft, Roch Cholowsky.
