When Davis Webb agreed to remain with the Denver Broncos as an offensive coordinator, pundits immediately assumed that he was guaranteed an opportunity to call plays. Otherwise, Webb could have left for several other OC openings with clubs that would have given him play-calling duties, an important step toward an eventual head coach job.

Speaking at the NFL combine last month, coach Sean Payton confirmed that Webb will call plays in 2026, but Payton implied that calling plays was not a prerequisite for Webb to stay with the team.

“I think he was wanting to stay," Payton said. "He interviewed at a few spots, and I think that that opportunity’s going to come for him, to be a head coach. I don’t know if this was, ‘Well, I’m staying if I get to do this.’ I don’t think that was the case. I don’t think he was going to… Well, I don’t want to speak for him, but I think he really likes what he’s begun to do here with us and the start of working with a young quarterback. It’s hard to leave that. So I don’t think it was… It was something I was already moving towards before anyone had even discussed it. It was midseason.”

Payton, 62, admitted last season that as he's gotten older, his play-calling is not always as fast as it needs to be. A potential transition to a younger coach like Webb, 31, started being considered before he became a candidate for OC this offseason. Regardless of whether or not play-calling was a prerequisite for Webb to stay, the promising young coach is now set to remain in Denver for at least one more season. If all goes well, he could be a head coach candidate as early as 2027.
