Despite missing a flurry of players, including Steph Curry, Kristaps Porzingis and Moses Moody on Thursday, the Golden State Warriors were able to put together one of their best performances of the season against Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets.
Without Curry, the Warriors have desperately struggled to close. Despite leading by double figures last week against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Warriors ended up losing by the game 13 points. On Thursday night, the Rockets attempted to steal the game late, but this time the Warriors answered. De'Anthony Melton and Al Horford knocked down clutch buckets down the stretch to pace the Rockets' comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. However, Alperen Sengun and Reed Sheppard were able to push the game into overtime for the Rockets.
It looked like the Warriors had a chance to end the game in the final seconds with a trip to the free throw line for Melton. Yet, Eme Udoka and the Rockets challenged the foul call on Kevin Durant in the final seconds and the call was overturned, erasing the foul and putting the ball at halfcourt for a jump ball. Despite winning the jump ball with six seconds on the clock, the Warriors didn't get a shot off, forcing overtime.
Despite being short-handed, the Warriors were able to control the overtime period on the back of Brandin Podziemski. Podziemski tallied seven of Golden State's 14 points in overtime, including knocking down a clutch 3-pointer to put the Warriors up three. Durant attempted to match Podziemski, hitting a three-pointer of his own. However, the former Golden State All-Star missed a game-tying free throw with under 30 seconds remaining. Durant missed two free throws in overtime after making his last 34 consecutive free throws. In overtime, the Warriors were able to hang on, dealing the Rockets an upset loss to start their three-game road swing, 115-113.
Podziemski tallied a team-best 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field with four made triples to go along with nine boards and an assist in 40 minutes. Melton added 23 while all five starters notched double-figure scoring numbers against the Rockets. Podziemski has scored 16 or more points in seven of his last nine games, including back-to-back 20 point plus perforamances.
Former Houston Cougar turned Golden State two-way guard, LJ Cryer, provided 12 points off the bench, knocking down four timely 3-pointers in 20 minutes against the Rockets. Thursday marked the first time Cryer has tallied double-figures in his short NBA career. Cyrer finished with a team-high +6 off the bench.
Reed Sheppard led the Rockets with 30 points off the bench. The former Kentucky Wildcat buried six 3-pointers to go along with six assists and three boards in 37 minutes off the bench.
The Warriors will now travel to Oklahoma City to face the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night.
