Despite his advanced age, the Golden State Warriors are still building their roster around 38-year-old star Stephen Curry.
The Warriors are clearly under the impression they can go the distance toward the end of the Curry era in the Bay. Still, their offseason moves must match their aspirations if they want to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy again in the immediate future.
Heavy’s Sean Deveney floated the idea of Golden State reuniting Curry with his 6-foot-11 former superstar teammate, who won the MVP award in 2014 and two championships with the Warriors.
“Still one of the league’s best pure scorers, but (Kevin) Durant is also a headache few teams want to employ,” Deveney wrote last Sunday. “Maybe a Warriors reunion?”
Will the Houston Rockets entertain the idea of trading Durant this summer? Probably not, considering the plan was never to acquire the 16-time All-Star via an historic seven-team offseason trade as a one-year rental.
That said, perhaps the Warriors could use Jimmy Butler and a few of their most valuable role players to convince the Rockets to prematurely end the Durant era in Houston. Technically, Durant isn’t at the peak of his career at age 37. However, his consistent scoring production suggests he’s just as prolific a bucket-getter as he was in his last 20s and early 30s with the Warriors.
Durant averaged 26.0 points per game with the Rockets this season, shooting 52.0% from the field and 41.3% from beyond the arc in 78 contests. Unfortunately, a bone bruise made Durant a non-factor in the postseason, but for the most part, his health hasn’t been overly concerning lately.
Even if the old jokes pour in following a potential Durant-Warriors reunion, it won’t change the fact that Golden State's odds of instilling fear into the rest of the Western Conference would elevate drastically.
