The 2026 spring high school sports season is underway throughout Oregon, and local athletes kicked off the year with plenty of stellar performances.
Every week, you get to vote for The Register-Guard's Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Active Chiropractic.
Here are the nominees for this week's boys Athlete of the Week:
Information about each nominee is listed below. Vote for the athlete you think is most deserving at registerguard.com/sports. The poll closes at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Junction City junior Kevin Anderson smashed a two-run go-ahead single in the seventh inning March 26 to lift the Tigers to a 6-5 win over La Pine.
Thurston senior Carson Buergey clocked 4 minutes, 2.06 seconds to win the 1,500 meters March 19 at the Jim Barks Grizzly Bear Open at McMinnville High School.
Buergey's time is the fastest in the state this season.
North Eugene junior Mason Baer went 4 for 5 with a triple and one RBI March 24 to help the Highlanders secure a 14-10 win over South Medford.
Willamette junior Daelyn Cervantes won the 400 in 50.92 March 18 at The Opener at Willamette High School.
Cervantes' time is the fourth-fastest in the state this season.
Sheldon senior Jaxon Detzler went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs March 26 to lead the Irish to a 9-0 win over Valley Vista (Arizona).
Willamette senior Jackson Doughty launched a three-run home run March 16 to lead the Wolverines to a 3-2 win over Tualatin. Doughty's homer was one of just two hits the Wolverines tallied on the day.
In a 2-1 loss to Twin Falls (Idaho) on March 21, Doughty threw 6 1/3 innings, struck out four and allowed just one earned run.
Thurston junior Parker Edwards went 2 for 3 with three RBIs March 26 to help the Colts to a 12-10 win over Mountain Pointe (Arizona).
The same day, in a 6-5 loss to Damonte Ranch (Nevada), Edwards threw five innings and struck out six.
Churchill senior Chase Hartley went 3 for 4 with one RBI and scored four times March 24 to help the Lancers to a 7-4 win over Lake Oswego.
Hartley also threw four scoreless innings in relief. He struck out four and did not allow a hit.
South Eugene sophomore Jacob Loveless won the 1,500 in 4:05.46 March 18 at the Opener at Willamette High School.
Loveless' time is the second-fastest in the state this season.
Junction City senior Kaleb Moore uncorked a shot put throw of 58-5 1/2 March 27 at the Maroon and Gold Intersquad. His mark is the best in the state this season by over four feet.
On the same day, Moore produced a discus throw of 162-8 — third-best in the state.
Churchill junior Erob Roberts won the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 38.66 seconds March 18 at The Opener at Willamette High School.
Roberts' time is the fastest in the state this season by nearly a full second.
Elmira sophomore Asher Varozza went 3 for 5 with a triple and three RBIs March 24 to lead the Falcons to a 21-0 win over Coquille.
Varozza also threw four scoreless, no-hit innings and struck out nine.
