The week of June 7-13 was the first full week of high school athletic competition in Iowa that was completely focused on high school baseball.

Baseball teams from the metro area had a productive week featuring a number of exciting games. There were several outstanding individual performances by baseball pitchers, hitters and catchers from the Des Moines metro area.


Here are the Des Moines Register's male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of June 7-13. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Kaleb Kosman, Johnston​

Kosman was productive for the Johnston baseball team during a 17-5, 11-0 doubleheader sweep of Waukee Northwest on June 11 at Johnston.

Kosman was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs during the 17-5 victory. He also walked and scored once during the 11-0 win.

Will Nesler, Ankeny Centennial​


Nesler provided a strong presence at the plate for the Ankeny Centennial baseball team during a doubleheader split with Dowling Catholic on June 8 in West Des Moines.

Nesler went 4-for-5 with a triple, run and two RBIs during a 5-4 loss to the Maroons. He finished 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI during a 10-1 Jaguar victory.

Chase Engel, DCG​


Engel was throwing heat for the Dallas Center-Grimes baseball team during a 5-3 victory over Newton June 8 on senior night at Grimes.

Engel struck out 15 batters in 6 2/3 innings of work as the winning pitcher. He gave up three earned runs on just four hits and two walks.

Brady Hicks, Saydel​


Hicks helped Saydel power past South Hamilton by a 14-2 score on June 9 at Jewell.

Hicks went 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs for the Eagles. He also was the winning pitcher in an 11-5 win over Roland-Story as part of a doubleheader with the Norse on June 8 in Story City, giving up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and only one walk in six innings.

Clayton Noah, Woodward-Granger​


Noah was mowing down batters on strikes all game for the Woodward-Granger baseball team during a 9-4 victory over West Central Valley on June 9 at Stuart.

Noah racked up an incredible 17 strikeouts, going the full seven innings as the winning pitcher. He gave up four earned runs on four hits with one walk, and he added a double on offense.
