The week of June 7-13 saw the 2026 IGHSAU girls state soccer tournament take place at Iowa State University in Ames.

It was a successful week for teams from the Des Moines metro area as Waukee Northwest repeated as Class 3A champions and North Polk picked up its first state title in 2A. Valley also made the 3A championship game and three other metro schools advanced to either the 3A or 2A the semifinals.

It was also a busy week of high school softball featuring outstanding performances by athletes from the metro area.


Here are the Des Moines Register's female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of June 7-13. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Natalie Elliott, Waukee Northwest​

Elliott was named captain of the Class 3A all-tournament team at the IGHSAU girls state soccer tournament after helping Waukee Northwest claim its second consecutive state championship.

Elliott assisted on both Northwest goals during a 2-1 victory over Valley in the 3A title game on June 13 at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames. She also scored the only goal in the Wolves' 1-0 semifinal win over Bettendorf on June 12, and she scored one goal and dished out one assist in a 7-0 quarter final win over Dubuque Hempstead on June 9.

Blythe Knight, North Polk​

Knight helped North Polk claim its first girls state soccer championship by anchoring a stout Comet defense during the week.

Knight was named the 2A all-tournament captain after playing a key defensive role in the Comets' 2-1 victory over Waverly-Shell Rock in the quarterfinals on June 9, followed by a pair of shutout victories. She helped the Comets blank four-time defending state champion Dallas Center-Grimes in the semifinals on June 12 and North Scott in the 2A title game on June 13, winning each game by a 1-0 score at the Lied Recreation Fields and Cyclone Sports Complex, respectively, in Ames.

Sabrina Rogers, Valley​

Rogers earned 3A all-tournament honors at the girls state soccer tournament after helping Valley reach the 3A championship game.

She scored two goals and dished out one assist during the Tigers' 4-1 quarterfinal win over Linn-Mar in the 3A quarterfinals on June 9 at the Lied Recreation Fields in Ames.

Makenna Pitlick, ADM​

Pitlick threw an overpowering game in the circle for the Adel-Desoto-Minburn softball team during a 2-0 victory over North Scott on June 12 at North Scott.

Pitlick threw a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks for the Tigers. She also went 1-for-3 with a double at the plate.

Jordyn Kennedy, Ankeny Centennial​

Kennedy had a big night swinging the bat for the Centennial softball team during a 10-2, 13-3 doubleheader sweep of Linn-Mar on June 13 at Ankeny.

Kennedy went 6-for-6 with four home runs during the two games. She homered three times, walked once and drove in seven runs during the 10-2 victory, and she was 3-for-3 with a double, homer and two RBIs in the 13-3 win.
