The week of June 14-20 saw high school baseball pick up in the Des Moines metro area.
It was an exciting week of baseball featuring area teams. Valley, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, knocked off No. 2 Indianola by a 5-1 score on June 16 at Indianola and Johnston beat Ankeny Centennial in a 13-12 thriller on June 18 at Johnston.
There were several other exciting games featuring outstanding individual performances from baseball players from the metro area.
Here are the Des Moines Register's male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of June 14-20. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Stedman threw a gem for the 4A No. 10 Valley baseball team in a 5-1 upset win over No. 2 Indianola on June 16 at Indianola.
Stedman gave up just one unearned run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks in 6 1/3 innings as the winning Tiger pitcher.
Gasperi helped power Ankeny Centennial to a 14-2 win over Waukee as part of a doubleheader on June 17 at Waukee.
Gasperi homered twice in four at-bats for the Jaguars. He drove in four runs during the game.
Ingle led defending 3A state champion North Polk to a 14-2 win over No. 4 Saydel in five innings during a Raccoon River Conference battle on June 18 at Alleman.
Ingle went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run. He scored and drove in three runs apiece for the Comets.
Hall made the most of his two plate appearances during Roosevelt's 19-2 victory over Des Moines North as part of a doubleheader on June 17 in Des Moines.
Hall singled, homered and drove in five runs to help the Roughriders roll to victory.
Johnson threw a strong game for the 3A No. 6 Carlisle baseball team during a big 4-2 RRC win over No. 9 Ballard on June 18 at Slater.
Johnson fired a complete-game three-hitter. He gave up two unearned runs and struck out eight batters with just two walks.
