No. 15 Tennessee (5-0) defeated Kent State (3-2) Friday, 4-3, in game No. 1 of a three-game nonconference series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Vols won the game in the ninth inning when Tyler Myatt hit a pinch-hit walk-off solo home run.
Jay Abernathy also hit a two-run home run in the series opener against the Golden Flashes, giving the Vols a, 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. The Vols scored three runs in the sixth inning as Manny Marin recorded a RBI on a sacrifice fly, tying the contest, 1-1.
Kent State led, 1-0, in the fourth inning after Luke Matthews hit a RBI single. The Golden Flashes also scored in the eighth and ninth innings.
Abernathy went 1-for-3. He recorded two RBIs and scored one run, while Reese Chapman went 2-for-4. He hit one double and scored one run.
Brady Frederick (1-0) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Vols. He totaled six pitches, including six strikes.
Tegan Kuhns started and pitched 5.2 innings for Tennessee. He allowed one hit, one run and three walks, while recording four strikeouts. Kuhns totaled 91 pitches, including 52 strikes.
Brayden Krenzel pitched two innings for Tennessee. He allowed one run and one hit, while recording five strikeouts. He totaled 34 pitches, including 23 strikes. Mark Hindy and Bo Rhudy also appeared in relief for the Vols.
