SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — It’s almost playoff season for Central High School Basketball.

As Central High School gears up for playoff season, the Bobcats face longtime rival Odessa Permian once again Friday night. Central goes for the season sweep after knocking off the Panthers 74-67 on January 28, but greater stakes await heading into this matchup.

With a win, the Bobcats would clinch at least a share of a District 2-6A Region I title. They enter Friday’s matchup with a one-game lead for first place with at 7-1; their only loss came January 20 at Midland Lee. The Bobcats are in the driver’s seat with two regular season games left, meaning they do control their own destiny for an outright title by winning out. In order to clinch an outright title Friday night, Central will need a win and Midland Lee loss at Odessa. Regardless, the Bobcats look to secure their first district title since 2012 and it all starts with taking care of business at Odessa Permian.

“We’ve got to take care of business [at Permian],” Bobcats head coach Arsenio Geter said. “It’s going to be tough on the road, but I feel like if we’re locked in mentally and we do the things we do well with 110 percent effort, we’re going to be in a good spot to be successful.”

On the Lady Cats’ side, the playoffs have been secured. Central clinched the fourth and final postseason berth in its district with a 40-37 win over Midland High Tuesday. That win snapped a three-game losing streak, and despite the roller-coaster type of season Central has had, the Lady Cats got the job done when it mattered most. Head coach An’Jolique Woodson’s squad will face El Paso Montwood in the bi-district round at Monahans on Feb 17. Woodson is proud of her team’s resiliency, believing confidence is key for her players.

“I’m very confident in them,” Woodson said. “I just want to be able to have that confidence because if they’re confident in their selves and they put that on the floor, anything is possible with these girls.”
