An injury to tennis star Victoria Mboko left her in tears and caused her to withdraw from her singles match. Now, her current doubles schedule with Serena Williams is in doubt.
On Wednesday, Mboko retired early from her match against Karolina Pliskova at Queen's Club in London after an apparent knee injury. The 19-year-old was moving laterally across the court to get to a Pliskova forehand when she slipped, sending her to the grass. Mboko immediately grabbed at her left knee. She did not play another point. Pliskova took the first set 6-2, and the 19-year-old was up 4-3 in the second set.
"We played quite a good game today," Pliskova said. "(Mboko) was improving as the match was going, so it would have been a nice match, but I wish her only the best. Of course, this is not the way we want to win, so hopefully she's going to be fine for Wimbledon."
Mboko is currently slated to play in a doubles match with Williams, who came out of retirement earlier this month, on Thursday, June 11 at Andy Murray Arena.
The duo recently had a decisive win in Williams' return to pro tennis. On June 9, Mboko and Williams defeated American Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, during the first round of the HSBC Championships women's doubles.
