One day after playing a stellar doubles match with Serena Williams, Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko suffered a leg injury at the HSBC Championships and was forced to retire mid match against Karolina Pliskova.
While running for a ball, Mboko twisted her leg in an odd way. With Mirra Andreeva claiming a maiden Grand Slam as a teen, Mboko is considered the next best teen to do so with Wimbledon as her last chance before turning 20 in late August. Wimbledon begins in 19 days.

It is extremely unlikely that Mboko will be able to play doubles with Serena in the second round. That match against Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund is scheduled for Thursday, June 11 at 12:30 PM EDT.

When assessing injury concerns, many would have assumed that the 44 year old Williams would be a bigger risk, but this is part of the uncertainty, challenge, and heartbreak associated with professional tennis.

Mboko and Serena showed great camaraderie on the court, and their games complemented each other. Serena hand-picked Mboko as her comeback partner, and she has made it clear she is not prepared to play singles yet. More training would be necessary.
Will we see more of Mboko and the Mboko/Serena doubles team before Wimbledon? Let’s hope so. WTA tennis is better with them competing.
In the meantime, Serena will be playing doubles with Karolina Muchova in next week at Berlin.
