Victor Wembanyama is showing how badly he wants to win a championship with Spurs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Antonio Spurs made it all the way to the NBA Finals thanks to Victor Wembanyama, but they fell hard to the New York Knicks in just five games.
Wembanyama hasn't forgotten that taste of defeat. Even though the Spurs should be proud that they got as far as the Finals, it's not the same as winning a championship, and that's the goal.
Now, Wembanyama is showing just how much he wants to win an NBA championship and also reiterating that he wants to do it with the Spurs.
Victor Wembanyama is showing he wants to be a Spurs player for life
In order to win a championship, you have to have not just a star player like Wembanyama but also the players around him who can help them win. That's why some star players take a pay cut. Doing so frees up resources, so teams have more money to work with and sign better players who can help those teams go all the way.
Wembanyama is reportedly in that frame of mind. On Friday, NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Report shared a report stating that the Spurs standout is willing to take a pay cut.
"There has been word this morning in Las Vegas that Victor Wembanyama is considering signing less than his five-year, $251 million maximum rookie scale extension to provide San Antonio greater financial flexibility," he wrote on X.
Also on Friday, Wembanyama took to X to send a message to San Antonio. He's not going anywhere. "Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes," he wrote with a black heart emoji.
So, even with the disappointment of the Spurs' NBA Finals loss, the future looks bright for San Antonio. If this team can build a stronger roster around Wembanyama and surround him with tough players, other teams should get nervous.
