Emma Hayes, she's just like any other soccer fan!
The U.S. women's national team coach said she "felt like a kid again" after getting to meet Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah. As captains of their teams, Messi and Salah were on the field with Hayes when she did the coin flip ahead of Argentina and Egypt's round-of-16 game on Tuesday, July 7, at the men's World Cup.
"I still can't believe the game I've just witness but to meet Messi and Salah, I felt like a kid again," Hayes wrote in a post on her Instagram story that included a photo of her with the coin and another of her with Messi, Salah and the match officials.
Hayes stayed to watch the game along with her son Harry. They saw an instant classic, with Argentina scoring three goals after the 79th minute to stun Egypt. Cristian Romero scored in the 79th minute and then Messi equalized a few minutes later, extending his World Cup record with the 21st goal of his career.
Enzo Fernandez scored the winner in the 92nd minute with a header to send Argentina into the quarterfinals.
Hayes has attended several games during this World Cup. When the tournament is over, she'll turn her attention to the women's World Cup next year in Brazil, where the USWNT will be favored to win their fifth title.
Hayes took over as the USWNT's coach in May 2024 and, less than three months later, led the Americans to the Olympic gold medal in Paris.
