The round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup concludes on Tuesday, July 7. Kicking off the day's doubleheader of win-or-go-home action will be Argentina and Egypt.
The matchup will take place in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, temporarily known as Atlanta Stadium for the World Cup, where both teams will attempt to continue competing in the tournament. The game will feature a pair of stars who command the world's attention whenever they lace them up.
Argentina fields arguably one of the best of the this generation in Lionel Messi. In their previous match, Argentina was able to escape a scare against Cape Verde, coming out of the match with a 3-2 victory in the round of 32 on July 3. Messi opened the game with a goal at the 29th minute. Cape Verde matched them. Both teams needed additional time in a thriller to decide the outcome, but it was Argentina in the end who prevailed.
Egypt will have primetime player Mohamed Salah starring in the lineup after he suffered a hamstring strain and was substituted during Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Iran in the group stage on June 26. Salah participated in Egypt's match against Australia during the round of 32. He led the squad to a historic 4-2 penalty shootout victory on July 3 in Dallas.
"I always feel proud to wear the shirt, nothing makes me more proud than that, and always like seeing the boys happy and enjoying the moment, it's nothing can match that," Salah told reporters after the match win against Australia. "Today was one of the best days of my life. Make the history with the team and try to give my best and play while I'm, I'm hurt, because this is what I do for the country. I'm very proud of the moment, and very proud of the boys. I don't want to take any credit from them."
