VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — USD football kicked off the 2026-27 season with fall camp on Wednesday morning.
Matt Vitzthum and his coaching staff have a decision to make. Nevan Cremascoli, Austyn Modrzewski, and Jackson Proctor’s battle for QB 1 continues into fall camp.
“I wouldn’t say anything today was super glaring,” Vitzthum said. “Either good or bad, but it always changes when I go in there and watch the tape as well. We have a plan that we feel really good about about that position.”
Vitzthum and his staff plan to hone in on their top guy as camp continues to progress, with the goal of officially naming one by the conclusion of fall camp.
“We’re going to go the first four, five days here with things pretty equal and then we’re going to make a decision to probably give a guy the majority of the one reps to see if that guy can kind of handle that role,” Vitzthum said. “If he can’t, we’ll put the next guy in there.”
“To put it pretty simple, whoever is taking that spot, the entire roster is behind him,” running back Charles Pierre Jr. said. “We support whoever’s going to be in that position because they are all showing really good progress.”
The Coyotes started the 2025 season 0-2, with losses at Iowa State and Lamar. The need for a better start to the season only amplifies the importance of getting the quarterback position right and establishing a sense of urgency and consistency on both sides of the ball from day one.
“The best teams are always consistent, the best plays are always consistent,” defensive lineman Chris Dixon said. “Obviously when our QBs are consistent with their play, that helps with us.”
“We did not come out of the gates very fast,” Vitzthum said. “That’s probably due to a lot of things, but I know the things that we can control right now are starting fast in practice.”
KELOLAND will have updates as the quarterback battle develops ahead of game one against Central Connecticut State on August 29.
