Fresh off the USC Trojans baseball team’s best season in decades, a young talent has entered the transfer portal.
Augie Lopez, a designated hitter and catcher, entered the portal, as reported by Pete Nakos of On3.

Lopez was a Big Ten All-Freshman Team pick last year and performed even better in his sophomore season, slashing .278/.364/.590/.954 with 57 RBIs, 19 home runs and 14 doubles.
He was especially strong during the NCAA Tournament, hitting 11-for-34 over eight games with two homers, two doubles and nine RBIs.
Of those eight games, he recorded at least one hit in seven, noted Daniel Hager of On3.
He also was named most outstanding player of the College Station Regional.
Lopez hasn’t posted about the portal on his Instagram page, but prior to the Trojans’ loss to the UNC Tar Heels in the Super Regionals, he praised the USC program and the step forward they’d made this season.
“It’s been an honor to wear the Trojan brand on the front of my chest,” Lopez said, as reported by Haley Sawyer of the Orange County Register. “Honestly, just knowing that this team is the team to bring USC back to a super regional is incredible. It hasn’t hit me until right now, but just feeling grateful and super blessed.”

As Lopez hinted at, the Trojans made it to the Super Regionals round for the first time in 21 years and were hoping to make it back to the College World Series for the first time in a quarter century.
As Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Los Angeles Times notes, “No player on the current roster was alive when the Trojans won their last national title in 1998.”
UNC derailed that return to the top this season, but it still was a successful year for the Trojans, the winningest program in college baseball history with 12 championships.
The question now is, can that momentum be sustained with Lopez playing for another school?
