US freestyle skier Elizabeth Lemley snatched gold in the women's moguls on Wednesday after Beijing champion Jakara Anthony of Australia flopped on what was expected to be a winning run.
It is the 20-year-old's first major title after she scored 82.30 points in the second final to edge out compatriot Jaelin Kauf, who also took silver in China four years ago. Bronze went to France's Perrine Laffont, the 2018 Olympic champion.
Anthony ended up finishing eighth and last after suddenly losing her balance on the moguls in the last run of the competition.
She led in the first final with a solid run but a back-to-back Olympic gold evaporated to shrieks of surprise from the crowd in Livigno.
Success would have given Australia their first medal of the Milan/Cortina Winter Games. The 27-year-old was Australia's sole gold at Beijing 2022.
