ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – An annual tradition in local soccer was a big success.

Despite colder temperatures at Ernie Davis Academy in Elmira, the Unified Soccer culmination game was a thrill for all who played and watched. Teams from Elmira, Horseheads, Corning and Ithaca competed for the opportunity to hit the field and show their love for the game.

Unified sports connects student-athletes with and without intellectual disabilities together to train and compete. Over 130 schools and nine out of eleven sections in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) are participating in Unified Sports throughout the state. Wednesday’s game will be one that will be cherished on and off the field.

In other action, the Elmira boys soccer team dropped a tough 4-3 double overtime loss on penalty kicks to Oneonta in the STAC Semifinals. Oneonta will now play Maine-Endwell Friday night in the finals. The game is scheduled for 7:30 PM at Maine-Endwell, the Spartans beat Chenango Forks 2-1 in the other semifinal contest Wednesday night.
