ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Horseheads baseball picked up a big win, as the spring sports season rolls on.

The Blue Raiders beat Elmira 8-2 on Monday, taking the 1st of a 3-game series for the week. Horseheads kicked off their victory with early offense, seeing RBI-singles from Lyncoln Bennett and Mason Markle, in the 1st and 3rd frames. Markle added another RBI to the Blue Raiders total, along with Hunter Matkosky. Bennett crossed the plate twice on the day, while 5 other Horseheads hitters did the same. Keegan Monahan was the team’s most efficient at the bat, going (3-5).

On the mound, Cooper Ball collected 8 strikeouts over 6 innings, before Markle closed out the effort with another. The Express saw 6 quality innings from Aedan Palmer, who struck out 5 batters over 6 innings. At the plate, Elmira was led by Palmer and Carter Sherman, who drove in the team’s only runs.

Horseheads will next host the Express on Wednesday, before the series closes on Friday in Elmira. Both games are set for a 5 p.m. start.

On the softball diamond, the Corning Hawks (6-0) and Schuyler Storm (5-0) continued their perfect seasons. The Hawks rolled past Horseheads 23-0, with home runs from Lauren DeRosa, Matti Johnston, and Keana Mann. On the mound, Johnston tossed 3 innings of 1-hit ball with 6 strikeouts, before Emelia Smith closed out the final 2 frames, striking out 3 and allowing 1 hit.

Schuyler’s Paige Ells delivers 3rd-straight shutout and drives in 7 runs, in win over Elmira Notre Dame.

The Storm shut down Elmira Notre Dame 10-0, with a phenomenal performance from sophomore Paige Ells. Ells totaled 7 RBI on 3 hits, with a single, double, and 3-run inside the park home run. On the mound, Ells earned her 3rd-straight shutout (including a perfect game on 4/8), going all 7 innings with 14 strikeouts.
