The North Carolina Tar Heels are off to a hot start in College World Series play, winning their first two games with a combination of shutdown pitching and clutch hitting.
UNC began its Omaha trip with a 6-2 comeback win vs. Ole Miss on Friday, June 12. Two days later, North Carolina pulled away late once again, beating West Virginia 5-2 to move one victory away from the CWS finals.
There's just one more opponent standing between the Diamond Heels and that final series. If you guessed West Virginia, you are correct.
As a result of the Mountaineers' dominant, 12-0 obliteration of Troy in Tuesday's elimination game, a Wednesday rematch now awaits.
UNC will battle West Virginia on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET. North Carolina needs just one more win, while the Mountaineers are looking to force another game on Thursday.
The Diamond Heels started hot Sunday, playing two runs against WVU star Maxx Yehl. UNC first baseman Erik Paulsen drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Gavin Gallaher, then Cooper Nicholson scored Owen Hull on a bases-loaded groundout.
The Mountaineers responded to tie Sunday's original matchup, thanks to an Armani Guzman single and Sean Smith scoring on a double play. North Carolina charged ahead with a 3-run seventh, starting with a Gallaher triple and ending with a Hull single, while Walker McDuffie and Caden Glauber shut WVU hitters down.

Folger Boaz has to cool down the Mountaineers' bats.
West Virginia scored 12 runs on Tuesday, racking up 14 hits and eight walks. The Mountaineers played with a sense of desperation, looking like the better team against Troy from opening pitch.
Boaz, UNC's typical Sunday starter, is struggling this season with a 7.03 earned run average. Boaz is 3-3 with a 1.85 WHIP, with hitters mashing a red-hot .332 off him.
On paper, this combination doesn't bode well for the Diamond Heels. Boaz struck out four ECU batters in the Chapel Hill Regional, though, allowing just one run.
If North Carolina wants to win Wednesday's rematch and clinch its CWS finals berth, Boaz has to at least neutralize WVU's bats.
UNC enters this rematch well-rested, last playing on Sunday. West Virginia just smacked Troy in Tuesday's elimination game, 12-0.
The Mountaineers will be hungry for this rematch. It's tough to score 12 runs in consecutive games, but WVU's bats are hot.
The Diamond Heels will start a struggling Boaz on the mound, but Glauber, McDuffie and Jackson Rose will be available in the bullpen. North Carolina's hitters are always a threat, too.
West Virginia jumps on Boaz early, while pitching performs against. These teams will play Thursday for a third time this season.
