North Carolina will turn to junior left-hander Folger Boaz on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Eastern when the Tar Heels face West Virginia on Wednesday.
Boaz, who has been the team’s No. 3 starter behind Jason DeCaro and Ryan Lynch, has not pitched in more than two weeks. His most recent appearance came in the NCAA regional against East Carolina, where he went 3 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run with one walk and four strikeouts.
Even with the long layoff, coach Scott Forbes said he has no qualms about giving Boaz the start. The junior left-hander has logged 56 1/3 innings this season and owns a 7.03 ERA.
“I thought Folger Boaz was outstanding against East Carolina,” Forbes said. “I think he can beat anybody.”
“That’s where you trust your preparation,” Forbes added. “You get Boaz on the mound and I think there would be some concern if he didn’t pitch well his last outing. I think his confidence is at an all-time high.”
There was some consideration of starting freshman pitcher Caden Glauber, who threw 33 pitches in the opener and nine more on Sunday against West Virginia. With North Carolina still holding the cushion of a possible Thursday game, though, Forbes chose Boaz.
However, Forbes didn’t want to risk losing Glauber for the rest of the tournament by having him throw too many pitches, believing he might be better saved for a possible do-or-die game Thursday or the championship finals.
“The way this format is set up, if you start Caden Glauber (on Wednesday), he might be done for the rest of the tournament if he throws 100 pitches,” Forbes said.
Behind Boaz, Forbes pointed to left-hander Jackson Rose and right-hander Matthew Matthijs as bullpen options and did not rule out using Glauber or Walker McDuffie, who threw 63 pitches Sunday.
UNC will take on West Virginia on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Eastern. If the Mountaineers win, they will have the elimination game on Thursday with a time to be determined. If the Tar Heels win, they move on to the championship finals with the first pitch being at 7 p.m Eastern on Saturday.
