The UNC baseball team will go dancing in Omaha on Friday, kicking off its College World Series run with a 7 p.m. first pitch against Ole Miss.
North Carolina swept its way through the Chapel Hill Regional, then faced trouble against USC in its own Super Regional. The Diamond Heels channeled their inner "Bosh Magic" on Sunday, walking off the Trojans on Owen Hull's double in a 4-3 victory. Caden Glauber, UNC's top bullpen arm, struck out 11 batters in the Game 3 victory.
Glauber also earned some well-deserved hardware before his CWS debut. On Monday afternoon, PerfectGame named Glauber its College Freshman Pitcher of the Year.
Through 25 appearances (three starts) this season, Glauber sports a 10-0 win-loss record, 2.20 earned run average, 1.10 WHIP, four saves, .184 batting average against and a Diamond Heels-best 99 strikeouts across 81 2/3 innings. Glauber is typically a long-relief guy, but he earned the Game 3 start Sunday and likely will again in Omaha.
Glauber's first victory came back on February 24, when UNC dominated North Carolina A&T in a 9-1 blowout. Glauber secured his ninth victory against Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament, then most recently against ECU on May 30 in the Chapel Hill Regional.
Not only is Glauber now officially recognized as the country's best freshman pitcher, he's one of college baseball's top hurlers overall. Glauber shows the poise of a seasoned veteran, like North Carolina ace Jason DeCaro. With DeCaro likely gone to the MLB Draft in July, Glauber will become a full-time starter in Year Two.
With two postseason victories and a Game 3 performance for the ages, just how much better will Glauber get throughout the Diamond Heels' CWS run?
