The UNC men's basketball team made a big splash on Monday afternoon, hiring Michael Malone to be its next head coach.
Malone's hiring coincides with the transfer portal, which opened on Tuesday. With several reserves and key bench contributors already in the portal, North Carolina has several spots it has to address.
One of the Tar Heels' greatest needs comes in the post. In the same week UNC hired Malone, it reached out to Alabama forward Aiden Sherrell, who has high praise for the boys in Carolina Blue. Inside Carolina's Sherrell McMillan reported on the contact saying that Malone's pitch was "He wants to win and make UNC an NBA hub."
A 6'10" sophomore originally hailing from Detroit, Sherrell became a full-time starter for the Crimson Tide during their 2025-26 season, which ended with a Sweet 16 loss to eventual National Champion Michigan.
Sherrell quickly proved himself as a reliable contributor, averaging 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks (team-high) and 1.1 assists per game. Recording three double-doubles across 34 games (all starts), Sherrell's most impactful performance arguably came in Alabama's NCAA Tournament opener against Hofstra, pouring in 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.
North Carolina already has an inside track for the Alabama big man. Tar Heels power forward Jarin Stevenson, a Chapel Hill native, played his 2024-25 season in Tuscaloosa with Sherrell.
Caleb Wilson declared for the NBA Draft, Henri Veesaar is mocked in this year's NBA Draft, while James Brown and Zayden High are both in the portal. If Sherrell commits to UNC, he and Stevenson, his former Crimson Tide teammate, suddenly form another tough frontcourt in Chapel Hill.
