North Carolina’s pursuit of a lead guard in the 2027 recruiting class has added another elite option.
The Tar Heels have extended a scholarship offer to five-star guard NaVorro Bowman Jr., according to reporting from both Inside Carolina and TarHeel247. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, is ranked No. 10 nationally, No. 5 among point guards and No. 1 in California by 247Sports. He is also No. 12 overall in the 247Sports Composite.
While Beckham Black and Cayden Daughtry have received much of the attention at the tip-top of the 2027 class, Bowman is a five-star talent and top-10 player in his own right. His combination of scoring, physicality, defense and leadership makes him another compelling candidate to eventually run Michael Malone’s offense in Chapel Hill.
Considering the amount of attention UNC gave Bowman during Peach Jam, the eventual offer felt almost inevitable.
Bowman was one of the event’s leading scorers for Team Why Not, finishing Peach Jam at 20.9 points per game. He provided his biggest statement against Team CP3, erupting for 33 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Bowman shot 10-for-21 from the field, connected on seven of his 11 three-point attempts and went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.
The closing sequence was particularly memorable. With Team Why Not trailing by 12 points late, Bowman scored 10 points in approximately 30 seconds, including three straight deep three-pointers. His team ultimately fell, 86-82, but Bowman demonstrated the confidence and shot-making ability required of a high-level lead guard.
That performance came one day after another impressive all-around showing in which Bowman recorded 25 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists in a victory.
Malone’s interest extends beyond one productive week. Bowman told TarHeel247 that the UNC head coach had remained in nearly daily contact, watched his games even when unable to attend and offered specific feedback concerning turnovers, free-throw shooting, communication and involving teammates. Bowman also pointed to Malone’s NBA experience as an important factor because of his own professional aspirations.
Athletic success is not unfamiliar to the Bowman family, although the elder Bowman established his name in a different sport.
Bowman’s father, NaVorro Bowman Sr., starred at linebacker for Penn State before becoming a three-time Pro Bowler with the San Francisco 49ers in 2012, 2013 and 2015. He was also a four-time first-team All-Pro selection and led the NFL in tackles during the 2015 season.
More recently, Bowman Sr. served as the Los Angeles Chargers’ linebackers coach. He stepped away following the 2025 NFL season to spend more time with his family and become increasingly involved in supporting his son’s athletic development.
The younger Bowman has built an impressive résumé of his own. He averaged 22.5 points and five assists as a junior at Notre Dame and earned first-team all-state recognition. Bowman also helped the United States win gold at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup, averaging 11.9 points, 3.6 assists, 2.7 rebounds and one steal across seven games.
Landing the son of an All-Pro NFL linebacker to serve as Carolina’s lead guard would be a notable recruiting victory for Malone. Bowman still has a crowded recruitment and more than two dozen reported offers, but UNC’s persistent communication, heavy Peach Jam presence and newly extended scholarship offer have positioned the Tar Heels to be a serious factor moving forward.
