Late May in the college baseball world means conference tournament time. Your North Carolina Tar Heels, who earned the ACC Tournament's second seed, start their postseason run Friday at 3 p.m.

UNC (43-10-1, 22-8 ACC) won its ninth-straight conference series to close regular season action, dominating NC State in the first two games of that annual rivalry series. Outside of a big loss vs. Coastal Carolina and early-season struggles vs. East Carolina and Virginia, the Diamond Heels beat virtually everyone with little resistance.

As North Carolina heads into postseason play, it stays second overall in the May 18 D1Baseball rankings. This is UNC's fourth-consecutive week at second overall, with UCLA continuing to lead the polls.

The Diamond Heels have a few days of much-needed rest, but they can't enter conference tournament play rusty. 7-seed Virginia Tech, 10-seed Notre Dame and 15-seed Clemson are all fighting for the right to face North Carolina on Friday afternoon. UNC won regular season series at both the Fighting Irish and Tigers, but never previously faced the Hokies.

The Diamond Heels have a strong team every year, but something feels different about their 2026 squad. North Carolina has arguably its deepest pitching group ever, anchored by Jason DeCaro in the starting rotation, while Walker McDuffie and Caden Glauber mow down hitters in the bullpen.

UNC doesn't have any First-Team All-American hitters, but instead a powerful, balanced group with newcomers like Owen Hull and Jake Schaffner. Gavin Gallaher, no stranger to postseason heroics, looks to deliver another memorable moment (or two) in the NCAA Tournament.

Rankings are great, but championships are memorable. Can the Diamond Heels win their second-straight ACC Tournament crown and, more importantly, their first CWS title in program history?
