GREENVILLE, S.C. — UNC basketball had no answer for Terrence Hill Jr. in an 82-78 overtime loss to VCU in the opening round of March Madness.
Hill knocked down the go-ahead 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to lift the 11th-seeded Rams (28-7) to a comeback win against the sixth-seeded Tar Heels (24-9) in the men’s 2026 NCAA Tournament. It was UNC's first loss in an opening game under fifth-year coach Hubert Davis.

Terrence Hill Jr. had 34 points, including 20 in the second half, carrying VCU to the finish line against UNC. Hill knocked down 13 shots, including seven 3-pointers. He had 20 points in the second half before knocking down the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime.
UNC was 12 of 20 from the free-throw line and had eight turnovers, many of them in the crucial final minutes that aided VCU's comeback. The Tar Heels were outscored 30-11 in the final 15 minutes and the Rams leaned on the elite performance from Terrence Hill Jr. to complete the comeback and upset.
The Tar Heels trailed 10-7 five minutes into the game and 15-14 almost midway through the first half. UNC responded with a 29-11 stretch, including a 22-6 run, to take a 15-point lead with 2 ½ minutes left in the first half. The Tar Heels had an 11-point halftime lead. It was the kind of start UNC needed after consecutive losses, but the team couldn't sustain it.
