North Carolina second baseman Gavin Gallaher has been named a Rawlings Gold Glove winner by the American Baseball Coaches Association, officially recognizing him as the nation’s top defensive second baseman.
The Apex, North Carolina native is in his first collegiate season at second base. He spent his first two years with the Diamond Heels at third before shifting back to his natural position following the offseason departure of Jackson Van De Brake.
Since the move, Gallaher has anchored a UNC defense that owns a .983 fielding percentage, seventh-best in the country. The Tar Heels also rank fourth nationally with 59 double plays turned, 38 of which have involved Gallaher.
Gallaher has handled 300 chances this season with only five errors, matching the team’s .983 fielding percentage. His 19.37 defensive runs saved lead all non-catchers in Division I. He is the second UNC player to earn a Rawlings Gold Glove, joining All-American and two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year Vance Honeycutt, who received the honor in 2024.
Gallaher and UNC will return to the diamond in Game 1 of the national championship series against Oklahoma on Saturday at 7 p.m. Eastern in Omaha, Neb. It is the first time since 2007 that the Diamond Heels will be in the national championship series.
