The 2026 MLB Draft is officially in the books after the two-day event wrapped up on Sunday. For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they saw several players hear their names called led by Jake Schaffner going in the first round to the Boston Red Sox.
But as the draft went on, a key Tar Heel didn't hear his name called.
Infielder Gavin Gallaher did not get drafted in the two-day event meaning he will return to North Carolina for another season in 2027. It's disappointing for Gallaher not to hear his name called as many believed he would be drafted.
The only good thing about this is that he will return to the Tar Heels, giving them a big bat in the lineup and allowing for him to have another shot at improving his stock.
Gallaher was ranked in the top 250 by MLB.com and will now be the highest-ranked four-year player to return next season in college baseball.
For North Carolina, after finishing as the runner-up a year ago, they get some important players back in hopes of being a contender again.
