Even before baseball introduced an automated strike zone (ABS) challenge system, umpire CB Bucknor was regarded as one of the worst umps in baseball. And ABS has only exposed that, leading to one of the worst weeks we could imagine for an umpire.
On Wednesday, Bucknor's week managed to get even worse, and it had nothing to do with his performance on the field.
Bucknor was behind home plate for Wednesday's game between the Rays and Brewers when he took a 100.2 mph pitch tipped foul off his facemask. The scary scene led to Buckor leaving the game. Hopefully, he's OK as nobody wants to see anyone get hurt on the field.
Just in the past few days, Bucknor had six pitches overturned by ABS. Then, on Tuesday night, he oddly ruled that Jake Bauers missed first base, forcing the Brewers to challenge the easiest missed call we've seen all season.
Wednesday's injury just finished off the generationally bad week. Let's hope he's fine, but that's the kind of sequence that could have someone questioning their profession.
It stops being bad luck at that point.
