Lake Travis advanced to the state championship game Friday by sweeping its best-of-three state semifinals series and both Dripping Springs and Rouse enter Saturday still alive in the UIL high school baseball playoffs.
Wimberley forced a Game 3 but lost and saw its season come to a close.
Here’s the roundup for Central Texas.
Lake Travis 9, Humble Summer Creek 2
As it did during its 13-0 win in Game 1, the Cavs used a big inning to spur them to the win.
Lake Travis scored seven runs in the top of the sixth as it finished a dominating performance in a Class 6A Division I series.
“Our guys have a goal in mind,” Lake Travis coach Ryan Rogers said on the bus ride home in explaining how his squad won a state semifinals series by a cumulative score of 22-2. “They showed up on the first day of school wanting to win a state championship, and so this is just a step in that process. Our guys are very driven and knew what it was going to take.”
Yanuell Molina and Elliott Su ripped two-run singles to highlight the sixth for Lake Travis, which also received a sacrifice fly from Nelson Molina. The Cavs batted around the order in the inning, with Su leading off with a walk. Lake Travis drew two more walks and had two other batters get hit by a pitch to aid their seven-run outburst.
CJ Hansford tossed a complete game, striking out four and allowing only one earned run, and went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Kyle Brauchle finished 3-for-4 and Su tallied two hits to pace the Cavs.
Lake Travis will play either Keller or Rockwall for the state title at noon on June 6 at Dell Diamond.
“I’m just really thankful,” Rogers said. “We’ve had a lot of people supporting us through the season … so for (getting to the state championship game) to come to fruition, it’s just a heart of gratitude right now.”
Dripping Springs 3, Houston Memorial 2
Breydan Madeley’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth broke a 2-2 tie and ultimately gave the Tigers the win in Game 2 of a Class 6A Division II series. Dripping Springs trailed 2-0 after the first, but Cruz McBride’s RBI single in the fourth and Jason Steele’s RBI groundout in the fifth tied the game. Blake Cox struck out nine in 6 ⅔ innings and Nixon Badilla recorded the final out to earn the save. Madeley and Jake Pardue both finished with two hits to lead the Tigers offense. The Mustangs won Game 1 Thursday, 10-5.
Montgomery Lake Creek 9, Rouse 6
Joe Bury went 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored, Brody Sharp hit a solo home run and Colby Driskell finished 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Raiders in defeat in a Class 5A Division I series. Mason Gonzalez, Liam Mongold and Adolfo Erives also drove in runs for Rouse. The Raiders won Game 1 Thursday, 7-3.
Robinson 1, Wimberley 0
Jayden Hall threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts and Alex Abrusley had two hits to lead the Texans as they fell in Game 3 of a Class 4A Division II series. The Rockets used a hit batter, sacrifice bunt and Caden Coe’s single in the first to produce the game’s only run.
Wimberley dominated Game 2 earlier in the day with a 13-0 five-inning win. Abrusley tossed a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and Hall went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs to pace the Texans. Santana Raye, Dane Mignerey and Gentry McGinnis all drove in two runs in other notable offense.
