Conor McGregor vs. Max Holloway had all the hype in the world and then – poof – it was gone.
The UFC 329 main event ended in cataclysmic fashion Saturday when McGregor (22-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) suffered what appeared to be a knee injury just 69 seconds into the Holloway (28-9 MMA, 24-9 UFC) rematch at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
For the first time in five years, McGregor took the cage. He sported his old-school mohawk – a look he hadn't used since his UFC debut in 2013 vs. Marcus Brimage. He entered the arena to his iconic mashup of "Foggy Dew" by Sinead O'Connor and "Hypnotize" by the Notorious B.I.G. He billy-strutted around the cage and kissed the sky when Bruce Buffer announced his name.
That's when the heightened nostalgia came crashing back down to Earth – maybe even through Earth, metaphorically speaking.
McGregor, 37, came out of the corner flying with a jumping kick attempt. When he landed, it appeared his knee gave way. He tried to get back up, but twice more fell to the canvas, leading to Holloway having a conversation with Mike Beltran about whether the fight should stop.
McGregor got back to his feet but, even without contact, grimaced hard, in clear pain. He and Beltran were on the same page at that point: the fight was over. The all-time-gated UFC event (per Dana White) ended essentially on the first strike.
McGregor had not competed in combat sports since July 2021, when he broke his leg in a bout vs. Dustin Poirier. The injury was the most devastating of his career, though ironically enough he also suffered a knee injury in his first meeting vs. Max Holloway in August 2013. That time, McGregor fought out the rest of the bout and won by unanimous decision. This time, the pain appeared to be too much.
McGregor elected not to be interviewed in the cage post-fight, but limped down the runway under his own power. The extent of his injuries is not known at the time of publication. Meanwhile, Holloway did his best to wrap his head around the unfortunate situation, calling for a trilogy bout down the line.
