UEFA responds to Vinicius Jr. Benfica controversy

UEFA have now addressed the Vinicius Jr controversy following Real Madrid’s match against Benfica. Sky Sports News on X shared UEFA’s official position on the matter.

“The official reports from the matches played last night are currently being reviewed. Where matters are reported, proceedings are opened, and should they lead to disciplinary sanctions being imposed, they are announced on the UEFA disciplinary website.

“We have no further information to provide you or any further comment to make on this matter at this stage,” the message revealed.

The governing body’s statement confirms that the referee’s report and match documentation are under review before any formal action is taken.

UEFA’s standard protocol requires assessment of evidence before disciplinary proceedings are opened.

What happened between Vinicius Jr. and Benfica

The controversy stems from an incident late in Real Madrid’s victory over Benfica in the Champions League.

After scoring and celebrating near the corner flag, Vinicius Jr became involved in a confrontation with Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

Vinicius later indicated that he had been subjected to discriminatory language, prompting him to alert the referee. The match was briefly halted as officials followed UEFA’s anti-discrimination protocol, which includes potential public announcements and temporary suspension of play.

Benfica players disputed the accusation, while Real Madrid players visibly rallied around Vinicius during the stoppage. The episode reignited wider discussion about racism in European football and the consistency of disciplinary outcomes.

For now, UEFA’s review process will determine whether formal charges are brought. Until then, the matter remains under investigation, with both clubs awaiting clarity from the governing body.
