Less than two weeks after UCLA’s season ended in the Women’s College World Series, former Bruins standout Megan Grant is already making an impact at the professional level.

On May 31, UCLA’s season came to a close with a loss to Texas Tech in the Women’s College World Series. Just five days later, Grant signed her first professional contract after being selected fourth overall by one of Athletes Unlimited Softball League’s newest expansion teams, the Portland Cascade.

During Portland’s June 10 matchup against the Carolina Blaze, Grant launched her first professional home run, a 313-foot shot out of the park, setting the AUSL record for the longest home run in league history.

The milestone coming in only her first week as a professional athlete hints at a promising future in the AUSL.

Grant is one of 12 former UCLA players competing in the AUSL across six teams, and one of the three rookies joining the league this season; she also isn’t the only link to the Bruins in Portland.

Cascade head coach Tairia Flowers was a 2003 NCAA champion with UCLA, who graduated as a two-time All-American, a three-time All-Conference and All-Women’s College World Series selection and ranks second in UCLA history in games played.

What is Grant’s UCLA legacy?

Grant leaves UCLA as one of the most accomplished players in program history. A dual-sport athlete, she competed for both the Bruins softball and women’s basketball teams during her collegiate career.

On the softball field, Grant established herself as a hitting force, setting the NCAA Division I single-season home run record with 42 home runs in her senior season. She also finished her UCLA career as the program’s all-time home run leader with 91 career homers.

While Grant’s professional career is just starting out, a record-breaking debut suggests the athleticism that made her one of college softball’s stars could translate quickly to the AUSL level.
