The No. 1 UCLA baseball team were pushed to five extra innings by Rutgers, but won their opening game of the series 4-1 in 14 innings at Bainton Field in Piscataway, N.J. on Friday.

The Scarlet Knights and Bruins were both locked in a defensive battle for majority of the game, which was a surprising element with UCLA coming off of a 7-3 victory of Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. UCLA had four pitchers step on the mound for them and they allowed four hits and a run, while throwing for an eye-catching 30 strikeouts. Junior right-handed pitcher Logan Reddemann played the most with eight innings leading to two hits, a run and 18 strikeouts.

Home field

UCLA invaded Rutgers' home field and the Scarlet Knights showed that they were unwilling to go down easy. The Bruins swatted two pitches for hits to get on base in the top of the first, but the Scarlet Knights would strike first with a run in the bottom of the first.

Evening the score

The Bruins were able to tie the game up in the top of the third with two hits by a pitch and a walk leading to junior infielder Roch Cholowsky getting past home plate off of another hit by a pitch. Although the bases remained loaded, UCLA was unable to capitalize and the game would remain tied 1-1.

Swing and a miss

Friday's game was an offensive struggle for the Bruins. UCLA made contact twice in the fourth and again in the fifth, but continued to struggle getting runners anywhere near home plate. Four innings later, the Bruins got to third base, but no farther, as the game continued into extra innings.

There's a run somewhere

In the first four frames of extra innings, the Bruins defense remained fierce with a hit leading nowhere in the tenth and thirteenth innings. Unfortunately for UCLA, the game would persist as their batters continued to get bested by Rutgers.

Taking the win

The Bruins batting struggles disappeared in the top of the fourteenth inning. UCLA struck four pitches, but scored their tie-breaking run off of fielder's choice. The Bruins put up two more runs off of a single to put UCLA up by three heading into the bottom half of the inning, where they would win by striking out the side.

UCLA will play their second game of the series on Saturday with an anticipated start time at noon PT.
